Firefighters in Stockport get closer to moving into new fire station

Fire crews in Stockport have left their old premises on King Street West, as they prepare to move into a new site.
They'll be temporarily based from Whitehill Station in Reddish, as they wait to move into a brand new building.
The new building will be based on the same site as the old King Street West station. The old station will be demolished to make way for the new one.
The new station would be slightly smaller in size, for greater 'operational efficiency' - however, it would uphold the same level of service to local communities in Stockport.
Response times will neither increase nor decrease, and likewise with the number of engines. Crew size would also remain broadly similar.
To mark the occasion of leaving the old station behind, firefighters came together on Tuesday 24 June for their last ever parade.

Plans for the King Street station were unveiled in summer 2022, and a consultation with local residents was held in June 2023.
The construction of the new station was delayed when the lead contractor went into administration.
However, GMFRS has said it has 'worked hard' to get the new station 'back on track'.
They have selected a new contractor, subject to some final approval.
The new station will include state-of-the-art facilities, as well as a room which local community groups and organisations can use.

It's estimated to cost around £6m, part of a £38m investment from the Greater Manchester Combined Authority across fire stations in the region.
Indeed, as well as Stockport, there will also be new stations in Bury and Blackley.
In a statement on social media, the Manchester Fire Brigades Union said: "Today Stockport fire station closed its doors for the last time.
"Crews will be working from Whitehill station whilst the old station at Stockport is demolished and the new one is built. [...]
"FBU Manchester would like to extend its thanks to Navendu Mishra and his team for all their hard work, without which we would not be in the position we are in today."
