Patients at Stockport NHS will now benefit from faster diagnosis and treatment thanks to a new information system.

The Stockport NHS pathology department has now introduced a laboratory information management system (LIMS) from Clinisys, which enhances the processing of test results.

It means that the millions of tests carried out yearly in Stepping Hill Hospital's laboratories can be managed, tracked, and analysed more easily.

Further still, the LIMS can be more easily integrated with other systems, which in turn means results can be sent between health professionals - such as GPs and clinicians - more quickly.

Stockport NHS Trust has been supported with the new system by the Greater Manchester Pathology Network; one of the largest pathology networks in England which serves an estimated 2.8 million people.

The trust has joined with three other trusts in the network; Bolton, Tameside and Glossop Integrated Services, and the Northern Care Alliance, in implementing the new system.

This major system upgrade has meant close working between the trust's pathology department, clinical and digital colleagues, as well as with local GPs, to ensure the new system has been implemented with disruption kept to a minimum.

Mark Gordon, Stockport NHS Foundation Trust's pathology operational lead said; "Following the launch with cellular pathology and microbiology last year, it's fantastic to see the new LIMS now completely live in blood sciences.

"This is a significant step forward with the digital infrastructure of the laboratory in line with the national NHS digitalisation goals and will further benefit the adaption of full digital integration for Pathology.

"This has been a major project with the previous system in place since 1992, and I'd like to say a huge thanks all our pathology and IT colleagues for the expertise and skill they have brought, as well as Clinysis and the Greater Manchester Pathology Network for making this launch a success."
