Families in Reddish to benefit from new ‘one-stop-shop’, offering support for children

By Alasdair Perry 28th Feb 2024

Families in Reddish and the Heatons have a new place to access support and information for their children.

The new 'family hub' opened on Abingdon Road on 15 February. It aims to be a 'one-stop-shop' for any kind of assistance parents might need.

The hub will offer support with infant feeding, education, language, mental health support, advice on relationships, and more. It aims to support children from pre-birth through to the age of 19 (or up to 25 for young people with special needs).

This hub, and others like it elsewhere in Stockport and the UK, form part of the UK Government's Family Hubs programme.

The borough's hubs have been brought about by Stockport Council, One Stockport, and Stockport NHS Trust.

They are staffed by people who have received relevant 'family hub' training,

Cllr Wendy Meikle, cabinet member for children, families, and education, said it was 'fantastic' to see the new hub open.

"Having one place in the heart of a local community that children and families can go to for in-person information, help and support when they need it will help improve families' lives", Cllr Meikle said.

"One Stockport Family Hubs are one of the many ways we are bringing together services, organisations and groups so our residents can access what they need in one place.

"We know accessing information and support can be complicated, and we want to make it easier for people to help themselves, their families, and those they care for."

Similarly, Nic Firth, chief curse at NHS Stockport Foundation Trust said: "Family Hubs [...] join up more support at a local level, and provide good care and support for families with children of all ages."
