Standing on the Wellington Street-Piccadilly roundabout in Stockport, derelict office block Victoria House has seen new buildings popping up around the town centre.

A short distance from Stockport Market and Merseyway Shopping Centre, Victoria House sits at a key location in the town which is being transformed through a £1bn regeneration scheme.

But as development has taken place around Stockport, the empty Victoria House has attracted trouble, being 'the subject [of] an arson attack in 2023' according to planning documents sent to the council.

Reports describe the building as being in 'poor' condition which would 'require significant investment to bring it back into use as an office building.'

So what's does the future of the building look like?

In July last year, councillors approved plans to demolish the Victoria House building and build a 20-storey tower block, in a £70m project led by Progressive Living in partnership with Picture This.

Spanning two buildings from eight to 20 storeys, it will bring a mix of one, two and three-bedroom apartments to Stockport when complete, and a total of 245 new homes.

New plans have been submitted this month to move ahead with the demolition of Victoria House in 2026.

Reports sent to the council state that work to knock down Victoria House could begin in March and last for around seven weeks, opening up the land for construction of the new homes.

After the planning application for redevelopment was approved by councillors last July, bosses behind the project said it could 'revitalise a key gateway' to the town centre.

David Fairclough, director at Progressive Living, said at the time: "We're delighted to have secured planning for what will be a flagship scheme for Stockport.

"This approval represents a major milestone for a project that's been six years in the making, and we're proud to play our part in shaping the next chapter of the town centre's transformation."
