Edgeley dessert shop owner fined following 'severe' mouse infestation

The owner of a dessert shop in Edgeley has been fined £12,000 after a 'serious' mouse infestation was found during a hygiene inspection.
Mr Javid Shah, the former owner of Dessert Lounge on 19 Castle Street, pleaded guilty to seven food hygiene offences at Tameside Magistrates' Court on 9 May 2025.
During an inspection, officers found mouse droppings on preparation surfaces and food packaging.
They also found that there was no pest control in place, and that food handlers were not trained properly.
There was also no accessible handwashing point, or hand-drying facilities.
Mr Shah, who is no longer involved with Dessert Lounge, accepted full responsibility for the failings.
A subsequent inspection of Dessert Lounge found that hygiene had improved, and the business was awarded a four-star hygiene rating.
Cllr Dan Oliver, Cabinet Member Communities, Culture and Public Protection, said of the earlier discoveries: "The appalling conditions found at Dessert Lounge represent a serious failure to protect public health.
"This kind of negligence is completely unacceptable, and we will continue to take strong enforcement action against any business that puts customers at risk.
"I'm pleased that improvements have now been made, but this prosecution sends a clear message that we will always prioritise the safety of residents and visitors when it comes to food hygiene."
