Delicious plates and a redecorate - inside The Midland pub's extensive transformation
By Alasdair Perry 19th Jul 2026
A pub in Marple Bridge is now as charming a riverside spot as one could imagine, thanks to an extensive refurbishment.
The Midland, which sits on Brabyns Brow by the River Goyt, re-opened recently after undergoing a 'thoughtful' re-imagination throughout May.
It now boasts a restored bar, new seating, a rejuvenated dining room, and an outdoor area for alfresco dining.
It also has an expanded new menu, which aims to celebrate 'the best of British pub dining'.
Think indulgent pub favourites combined with some delicious European fare, such as pan-roasted lamb rump, asparagus & squash orzo, and tarragon-battered line-caught haddock with thick-cut chips.
In a recent visit, Nub News sampled three phenomenal courses.
First up was some delicious port and cheddar mushrooms served with toasted rosemary and sea salt focaccia. The dish had a complex, smoky flavour which was simultaneously hearty and moreish - every mouthful a treat.
Next up was a dirty burger, with a prime beef patty, streaky bacon, cheese, and slow-cooked beef. After a subtle starter, this indulgent main proved that the chefs at The Midland have the classic bases covered, too.
Certainly, with the burger more than hitting the mark, it was abundantly clear within just two dishes that a range of palettes were perfectly catered for - literally, in this case.
And finally, a home-baked chocolate brownie with bourbon vanilla ice-cream for dessert was a satisfyingly sweet conclusion to the meal.
Naturally, the delicious food tasted that much better with the atmospheric new colours and lighting, cosy seating, and the gentle sounds of happy chatting diners and murmuring water nearby.
Indeed, the new layout provides the perfect setting to treat yourself to a lovely dining experience - whether you're pampering yourself or if you're coming with family or friends.
In fact, if you're bringing a few family or friends and have a party in mind, the pub has a new semi-private area with space for up to 14 guests.
There's also an option to cater for larger events of up to 70 people, ideal for celebrating life's big moments such as weddings and christenings.
Commenting on the pub's transformation, general manager Gary Smythe said: "We're delighted to welcome both new and familiar faces to the beautifully refreshed The Midland.
"Sitting at the gateway to the Peak District we want the pub to be your new favourite place in Stockport this summer, whether you're popping in for a drink in the sunshine, or enjoying a hearty Sunday roast after a hike, we've something for all the family."
