Council’s plan for new cameras at problem junctions moves ahead

Plans to install new cameras at problem junctions in Stockport are moving forward, as part of efforts to improve road safety and stop drivers breaking the rules with yellow box junctions and restricted turns.

Last year, the council was given new powers to enforce moving traffic offences, and drew up a list of locations where there are known issues on the roads.

Enforcement checks will be carried out in the areas using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, which will be used to issue fines to motorists caught breaking the rules.

The plan is to install the ANPR cameras at the initial junctions, but the council said any use of these cameras will be communicated to motorists and residents before they are erected.

Any money made from fines dished out to drivers will be reinvested to cover the cost of operating the scheme.

The council has drafted a new policy to manage the process of enforcing its powers at other sites in the borough in future.

The changes are due to be discussed at Stockport town hall next week during a meeting of the communities and transport scrutiny committee.

Cllr Grace Baynham, the council's lead on highways and transport issues, said: "The moving traffic offences enforcement will help improve the driving experience in various locations around Stockport.

"The legislation, which will bring the borough in line with many other councils both in our region and nationally, is aimed at helping to reduce congestion, increase road safety, and improve journey times for motorists and for those using public transport.

"The powers will include improved signage and road marking.

"We are committed to investing in technology to support safer and more reliable roads, and support the Greater Manchester Vision Zero road safety ambition of zero casualties on Stockport's highway network."

Five initial locations have been selected as part of the scheme:

  • Demmings Road in Cheadle – enforcing the 7.5t Weight Limit in place on the bridge,
  • A6/Bramhall Lane Junction, enforcing the no right turn from Bramhall Lane to the A6, and the no left turn from the A6 to Bramhall Lane,
  • Massie Street and High Street Junction in Cheadle enforcing the no right turn from Massie Street to High Street in Cheadle,
  • A6 London Road and New Moor Lane Junction, enforcing illegal entry of the yellow box at this location,
  • And the A6 and George's Road, Stockport junction, enforcing the no right turn from George's Road onto the A6.
