Councillors call for increased police presence at Stockport train station
Three Stockport councillors have written an open letter to the British Transport Police (BTP) to discuss the possibility of a policing post at Stockport train station.
Cllr Matt Wynne, Cllr Frankie Singleton and Cllr David Meller argued in the letter that a policing post would mean BTP officers could stay at the station for longer periods of time, which in turn would create a stronger police presence.
It comes in response to 'increasingly common' instances of anti-social behaviour and other crime at the station.
In July 2023, a man was jailed after threatening to kill railway staff with a knife. Generally, incidents of crime at the station have increased by 20% from June 2022 to June 2023, the letter states.
"A post at the railway station would provide a more regular presence at an increasingly busy railway station", the councillors propose.
"If there was signage at the station indicating a BTP police post presence, this would help act as a deterrent."
Stockport is the busiest train station in Greater Manchester outside the city centre, and is in the unusual position of doubling up as a thoroughfare from the town centre to Edgeley, particularly on match days.
