Contractor appointed for restoration work at Bramall Hall
Bramall Hall's restoration is now a step closer as Stockport Council appoints a specialist contractor to carry out the work.
Restoration Projects will carry out the £1.6m project to repair the roof, drainage, and general future-proofing for the next generations of visitors.
The hall will remain open as works take place. Indeed, a council spokesperson said it will be "a unique opportunity to see conservation in action".
The process is expected to last around 18 months - there will also be scaffolding in place.
The work is to be carried out with "greatest possible care to eliminate every possibility of damage" to the building.
Furthermore, the materials used would be as close as possible to those which are currently in place.
This includes the stone and lead in the roof, the brick in the chimney, and the cast iron downpipes - all of it will be as sympathetic with the character of the building as possible, with reclaimed materials being used where available.
Likewise, the contractors would aim to minimise the loss of existing timber elements in the building.
The costs are being met with a £1.6 million funding boost from Arts Council England’s Museum Estates and Development Fund
Cllr Helen Foster-Grime, Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Sport at Stockport Council, said: “Bramall Hall is an iconic and beloved part of our local and national history, and we are delighted to be moving forward with this vital restoration which will protect and safeguard our historic heritage for future generations to enjoy.
“The appointment of industry specialist, Restoration Projects, is a significant step in ensuring that this remarkable building continues to inspire and educate visitors for years to come.
"From winning the fiercely competitive bid alongside match funding from the council, to the engagement of all the teams involved including the brilliant volunteers, Friends of Bramall Hall and Bramhall Park, Stockport Council are leading the way with this challenging and exciting project.”
Adam Bell, from Restoration Projects, added: “We are honoured to be entrusted with the restoration of Bramall Hall. Our team is committed to preserving its historic character while ensuring it remains a vibrant and accessible site for all.”
