The Conservative Party has announced Oliver Johnstone as its parliamentary candidate for the Stockport constituency.

Having grown up in Stockport, Mr Jonhstone works in banking, and has formerly been a councillor at Stockport Town Hall.

He said: "My connection to Stockport is deep-rooted. My mother was raised in Heaton Moor by my grandmother - a housewife from Reddish - and my grandfather. who was a local pharmacist.

"My paternal grandmother was the daughter of a coal miner who grew up in a house just off Stockport Marketplace."

"I feel very proud to be a Stopfordian. Our rich history [...] has left an indelible legacy on our town.

"Yet our diverse districts and neighbourhoods with their own distinct identities, burgeoning town and village centres, and resurgent local football team attracting national recognition, leads me to passionately believe that Stockport's best days are ahead."

Mr Johnstone will contest the seat against incumbent Labour MP Navendu Mishra.

Speaking of the upcoming election, Mr Johnstone said: "A complacent and deeply divided Labour Party takes Stockport for granted.

"They have long forgotten about the urgent need to better connect our communities with the rest of Greater Manchester, to regenerate Edgeley and Reddish district centres and to create a competitive local economy to challenge rather than submit to the powerhouse of Manchester."

The candidate added: "Stick with the plan that is working under the Conservatives and which will deliver a brighter future for everyone or the Labour alternative which will just take us back to square one."
