Commuters around Stockport face major rail delays following power failure
By Alasdair Perry 6th Aug 2026
Rail commuters around Stockport are facing 'major' delays this afternoon (Thursday 6 August) following a power failure.
The failure, which occurred at the Manchester rail operating centre, has left the main controls for operating the railway without electricity.
It has resulted in a string of cancellations and delays around the North West rail network.
Some train operators are suggesting passengers avoid travelling altogether.
Disruption is expected until the end of the day, Network Rail has said, with trains possibly delayed by up to 120 minutes.
Check the Network Rail webpage for travel advice from individual rail operators.
