Cllr Graham Greenalgh elected as Mayor of Stockport, Cllr Kerry Waters elected as Deputy Mayor of Stockport

By Alasdair Perry 23rd May 2023

Cllr Graham Greenalgh has been elected as Mayor of Stockport for the ensuing 12 months.

The motion was proposed by Liberal Democrat councillor Ian Hunter, who did so on the grounds of Cllr Greenalgh's long experience in logistics, and his 'enquiring mind'.

Cllr Hunter also stated: "Graham cares. I see that in everything he does, and it is recognised by people across the chamber.

"He cares about Stockport and its history, he cares about its people."

Cllr Keith Holloway, also a Lib Dem, said that he was 'delighted' to second the motion.

"Graham, from everything we know, will be perfect for the mayoral role", he added.

The Mayor is first citizen of Stockport - the role involves chairing the council and heading meetings. Cllr David Wilson, who Cllr Greenalgh will replace as Mayor, stated in his speech of thanks that being Mayor is about meeting people - community groups, volunteers, and more.

The new mayor said in his acceptance speech: "I look forward to meeting volunteers, community groups, and residents." He also added his plans to advocate for Stockport's business and industries - something he described as "a particular interest of mine" - and that he planned to 'emulate' ex-Mayor Wilson's good work.

Labour councillor Christine Carrigan proposes Kerry Waters for deputy mayor. She will replace Linda Holt, ex-Conservative councillor. "I can't think of a better person to be deputy mayor", Cllr Carrigan said. "She is so embedded in the community, it feels like she knows everybody personally.

"She is a hard working and compassionate councillor, and I know she will bring everything she is to this role. I am honoured to move this appointment."

Cllr Karl Wardlaw, also a Labour councillor, seconds the motion.
