A cat has died after being left in a rucksack and abandoned in Reddish Vale Park.

The female black and white cat was found on 23 December 2025, collapsed and severely hypothermic after having been zipped up in the bag.

Although the cat was taken to the vet not long after she was found, the specialists were sadly unable to save her.

The RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) is now appealing for information to find out who abandoned the cat.

Francesca Iraci, an Animal Rescue Office at the RSPCA, said: "This poor cat was cruelly discarded like a piece of rubbish at a time when many were gathering with loved ones.

"She was found collapsed and was severely hypothermic when she was taken to the vet, and also had a distended abdomen. Sadly the vet was unable to save her but I take some comfort in the fact she was not alone and had been shown kindness by the vets and the member of the public who found her.

"It's tragic to think of her, abandoned alone in a cold park, zipped inside a bag, at the time she was in desperate need of urgent care.

"We are keen to find out who abandoned this cat."

Anyone who can help should contact the RSPCA on their dedicated appeals line 0300 123 8018, quoting incident number 01702394.
