Busy Stockport road to close for several nights as works continue

Works are set to continue along a busy Stockport road after a previous phase of disruption lasted months.
A £1.8m scheme in Romiley is aimed at transforming part of Compstall Road, with a new two-way cycling track along one side of the high street and an upgrade of the Romiley Precinct crossing for segregated pedestrian and cyclist use.
The project is being led by Stockport council and Transport for Greater Manchester to 'deliver a network of fully inclusive routes to make walking, wheeling and cycling safer, more attractive and universally accessible for all.'
But when construction barriers went up last autumn, business owners in the village warned that they'd had little notice from the council of works starting, and said the disruption could hurt trade.
The works paused in November for Christmas but are continuing this month with resurfacing on Compstall Road starting from February 16 lasting five nights.
A letter from the council to residents explained that 'Compstall Road will be closed each night from 7pm to 6am' while the works take place.
It continued: 'Oakwood Road will be closed at its junction with Compstall Road. Central Drive will also remain closed. Beechwood Avenue will also be closed at Compstall Road as a raised table is constructed to provide a level crossing for pedestrians over the side road.'
Road closures and route divisions in place will be 'clearly signed' to pedestrians and traffic.
The council's letter added that works will 'generally be carried out between 7pm and midnight, with noisier activities undertaken as early as possible.'
Funding for the scheme was approved by the Greater Manchester Bee Network Committee in 2024.
The wider aim of the project is to create cycling connections to nearby streets, offering routes through quieter roads and residential areas.
Stockport council was contacted for comment.
Cllr Grace Baynham, Stockport council's cabinet member for parks, highways and transport services, previously said: "We are investing in Romiley's future, making it easier and safer to walk and cycle, helping to reduce congestion, support our local businesses and creating a healthier environment for future generations.
"We're grateful to residents and businesses for their patience and cooperation as the final phases of these works along the high street are delivered."
