Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has reiterated plans to bring a Metrolink service to Stockport.

Speaking to a caller on BBC Radio Manchester, Mr Burnham said "I can assure you that that is very much still firmly our plan."

The Greater Manchester Mayor also said that plans for the tram were being discussed with Stockport Councillors - including Cllr Mark Hunter, leader of Stockport Council, and Cllr David Meller, leader of Stockport Labour Group - as well as representatives from local businesses.

Addressing another caller from Middleton, Mr Burnham explained that the tram to Stockport was achievable due to the extent of existing infrastructure - both the future-proofed interchange and the nearby East Didsbury line.

"The difference is there is an existing infrastructure in the south that can help get the tram to Stockport", Mr Burnham said.

"So, the tram goes to East Didsbury, and it's not as expensive, if you like, to take it that bit further south.

"For [Middleton] it would require a much bigger piece of infrastructure."
