Almost 600 miles of road was gritted yesterday (Monday 5 January) and overnight around Stockport borough.
Stockport Council has sent gritters to tackle snow and ice on 587 miles' worth of priority routes - this mainly includes A roads, main roads, and bus routes.
The borough has been facing a cold snap over the past few days, with the Met Office issuing a yellow weather warning for snow and ice, in place until 11am on Tuesday 6 January.
Salt is most effective when spread by traffic, as it doesn't melt ice instantly.
It is less effective when temperatures reach -5 degrees, and loses effectiveness altogether at -8 degrees.
Stockport Council also advised residents to use one of the 250 grit bins to help clear public roads and pavements.
