This is the rooftop garden in Stockport which bosses say is one of the tallest in the region outside Manchester city centre.

Part of the £60m transformation of Weir Mill by Capital&Centric, the historic building is being restored in a scheme which will create 253 homes in the heart of Stockport town centre, including two new apartment blocks.

New pictures have offered a first look at the progress, showing the rooftop garden with greenery, seating and views next to the town's iconic Viaduct.

The garden was built into the designs with an outdoor kitchen for alfresco dining, and a lawn with space to relax or get involved in yoga classes.

The restored mill was once a key part of Stockport's industrial past, but the site is now becoming one of the town's trendiest places to live.

Alongside apartments, the work will bring new public squares, riverside terraces, and an open air space for pop-up events and parties.

Future Weir Mill residents will also be able to enjoy a gym, co-working space, private dining, and a mini cinema area.

Work to restore the grade-II listed mill started in 2022 and is set to finish early next year, with residents moving into homes shortly after.

The massive scheme is a flagship project in the £1bn transformation which is changing the face of Stockport town centre, led by Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation.

Future plans include expanding the boundary of the MDC to include the area east of the town centre, where 4,000 new homes are planned.

Council leader Mark Roberts said Stockport is home to "the UK's largest town centre regeneration" project

"We're breathing new life into a site that's stood here for centuries, creating homes, green space and independent businesses that will help shape the next chapter of our town centre.

"As we look to expand the MDC boundary, Weir Mill sets the tone: bold design, big ambition, strong partnerships, and delivery that shows what the MDC and town centre west are all about, creating places that people want to live, work and spend time."

John Moffat, joint managing director at Capital&Centric, added: "Weir Mill is a proper passion project – breathing new life into beautiful old buildings and creating something unique for Stockport.

"The rooftop garden is going to be one of the best spots in town to hang out. You're up above the noise, with a peaceful space and incredible views. The new photos show it's really starting to come to life."
