Stockport named 'best place to live in the North West' by Sunday Times
Was it ever in any doubt?
Stockport has been named "the best place to live in the North West" by The Sunday Times.
It comes at a buoyant time for the town; indeed, prior to this accolade, Stockport has consistently found itself ranking highly in similar "best places to live" polls.
In a glowing write-up, The Sunday Times said "this proud old town is fast becoming fashion-forward, funky and family friendly".
There were 71 other towns in the national roundup. Stockport presided over some stiff competition in the North West, too, beating the likes of Knutsford, Prestwich, and Kendal.
North Berwick, East Lothian, was ranked top nationally.
Author Tim Palmer went on to say of Stockport: "The varied town is supremely functional, offering good-value houses [...] parks, choirs and sports clubs".
He also praised the proximity of both Manchester city centre and, in the opposite direction, the Pennines and the Peaks.
You can say that again, Tim. Still in its Town of Cultre tenure, the borough has had a plethora of new artworks, events, and openings of late.
From the upcoming unveiling of the new travel interchange, through to a host of new independent businesses, Stockport borough is 'popping off' as (we) Gen Zs sometimes say.
Councillor Mark Hunter, Leader of Stockport Council, said: "It's fantastic to learn that The Sunday Times has named Stockport as the best place to live in the North West, which is just the latest accolade for Stockport and further national recognition.
"It's not just us saying we're one of the most exciting towns around, it's coming from people far and wide and we couldn't agree more. We're committed to making Stockport a place everyone here is proud to call home."
Speaking more generally of the kind of towns on The Sunday Times' full list, Helen Davies (editorial projects director and Best Places to Live editor) said "These are all places where you can feel grounded as well as upwardly mobile: they have a mature sense of community, lively, supportive high streets and an eye to the future, whether that is eco-friendly measures, transport and regeneration, or imaginative inclusion of new housing."
