What the winning candidates said

Speaking of her win, Lisa Smart said: "This is the fourth time I've stood on this stage at a general election. [...] To be elected as the first woman to represent Hazel Grove in Parliament is the honour of my life, and it's a responsibility I don't take lightly. [...]

"My biggest thanks, of course, goes to the people of Hazel Grove - without doubt, the finest constituency in the land. Thank you for putting your trust in me to work with you on the things you told me you care about.

"Whether it's getting Stepping Hill sorted, taking real action to tackle the cost of living for those who are struggling, or bringing an end to sewage dumping, I will do my best for you."

Ms Smart also paid tribute to Lord Andrew Stunnell, the former Hazel Grove MP, who passed away recently.

Shortly after, Navendu Mishra was elected as MP for Stockport.

Mr Mishra said: "I want to thank the voters of Stockport constituency for re-electing me for a second term with a large majority. I'm very grateful to them. [...] Regardless of how people voted, [...] I represent everyone in the constituency.

He also said: "Housing is the single-most issue for me in Stockport for my constituents."

Tom Morrison was announced as the new MP for Cheadle around 3.40am. He described his election as 'the honour of [his] life'.

Outlining his plan of action, Mr Morrison said: "In the immediate term, it's Stepping Hill hospital. I've been talking throughout this whole campaign that we need to get the funding it needs to function as a hospital. That's the number one priority."

Speaking of his 12,000 vote majority, Mr Morrison said: "I'm really humbled. I just can't thank the people of Cheadle enough for giving me this opportunity to serve them."
