What to expect from the ‘Royal George Village’ project on Greek Street

You may already have seen or heard plans for the 'Royal George Village', on land between Greek Street and Wellington Road South.
The development will provide hundreds of new flats, plus office and car parking space, with a mixture of new and existing buildings.
Plans were submitted as early as 2020, with a completion date set for 2026.
Progress continues, though, following a funding boost last year and the beginning of demolition and construction works.
The site itself comprises six acres, including the 'Greek Street building' (the former metropolitan girls' school), and the vacant Torkington building (on Wellignton Road South).
The Greek Street building will be redeveloped into office space, without compromising the historic and architectural character of the building.
The Torkington building, meanwhile, will be converted into 122 apartments, and similarly the adjacent Lyme Centre would be demolished and replaced with a 16-storey apartment block with 258 flats.
Further still, an additional building will be built just west of the Greek Street building, and would be known as 'The Gateway' - it would house a further 62 apartments.
Complementing the development would be new landscaping and civic space, which, as the applicant argues, "will be vibrant and add character to the development and local area, [as well as] a range of seating opportunities allowing the public to both socialise and rest."
Progress on the development continues, and a planning application was submitted recently revising the design of the Torkington building.
Eamonn Boylan, interim chair of Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation, said: "Delivering more, high quality homes for local people to live in the town centre is where true regeneration starts – we then start to see the positive impact on our high streets, in our retail centres, and we create a larger workforce which attracts businesses and drives forward the town's prosperity."
