Volunteers sought to help make Stockport leg of Tour de France Femmes 'unforgettable'
By Alasdair Perry 25th Jun 2026
The world's top cyclists will be speeding through our town next year.
The Tour de France Femmes will be passing through the borough on 31 July 2027 as part of its UK 'grand departure' stage, before moving onto the continent.
And with just over a year to go, the event's organisers are now appealing for volunteers - or, 'JOY Makers' - to help make sure the race runs smoothly and enjoyably.
Volunteering roles could include race delivery (guiding cyclists or helping spectators at crossing points) or spectator support (wayfinding and welcoming).
If you do volunteer, you'll be among thousands of other helpers across the country.
The organisers say it's a small commitment, and can help develop skills and experience and potentially introduce you to some new pals.
Councillor Dan Oliver, cabinet member for communities, culture and public protection at Stockport Council, said: "This is a huge moment for our borough, and local people can be right at the heart of it. You do not need to be a cycling fan to get involved.
"Being a JOY Maker is about creating a brilliant atmosphere, supporting visitors and showing off the very best of Stockport and helping to welcome the world when one of the biggest sporting events arrives on our streets."
You can apply to be a volunteer here.
The UK stages of the Tour de France Femmes begin in Leeds, crossing the Pennines to Manchester where stage 1 will end.
Stage 2 will begin by passing through Stockport and then onto the Peak District, finishing up in Sheffield. There will then be a showpiece finale in London, rounding off the UK leg.
The Stockport borough section of the route will start on the border with Manchester city council, as the cyclists race down the A6 from Levenshulme.
They'll progress onto Stockport, parallel to the viaduct, and past Stockport Interchange.
Then, they'll pass through Offerton and onto Marple, before leaving Stockport and Greater Manchester, bound for Derbyshire's Goyt Valley and thence to Sheffield.
Once again, you can apply to be a volunteer here.
