From 1-7 June, volunteers across Stockport will receive due recognition in the upcoming National Volunteers' Week, with Stockport Council and Greater Manchester Police due to be involved.

"Volunteers' Week is an annual celebration of the contribution millions of people make across the UK through volunteering in their communities", according to the National Volunteers' Week website.

The week will comprise a whole host of events and activities which aim to celebrate the important work of volunteers.

Across Stockport, local organisations will showcase the importance of volunteer work. Last year, for example, attendees at the digital skills class in Edgeley said 'thank you' to the DigiKnow Digital Champions who volunteer their time to ensure no-one is left behind as everyday life moves more online.

Nor is the week limited to local organisations. GMP, for one, will be celebrating its citizens in policing – comprising 220 special constables, 120 police support volunteers, and 160 volunteer police cadets - by holding local thank you events, issuing long service certificates, and promoting opportunities to join the citizens in policing family through advertising further voluntary roles.

As lead for prevention ACC Colin McFarlane said: "Volunteers' Week is a chance to celebrate and recognise the fantastic contribution all our volunteers make.

"Thanks to our Special Constabulary, communities have benefited from over 75,000 hours of voluntary policing, dealing with local matters, serious crime, speeding vehicles and much more.

"Our Police Support Volunteers enhance service delivery, help reduce demand, and bring a broad range of skills; including enabling open days at our Force Museum, in providing Cyber awareness and prevention, and in leading our Volunteer Police Cadet Units."

Similarly, Liberal Democrat councillor Frankie Singleton - recently appointed cabinet member for communities, culture and sport - said: "Thank you to all the fantastic volunteers in Stockport for all they do to support our local communities.

"They are definitely the unsung heroes of our borough and the work they do is invaluable. Volunteering can be incredibly rewarding and is a fantastic way to meet new people and get to know and help your local community."
