'Unforgettable' documentary to show at Stockport's The Light cinema in rare screening
The Light Cinema will be hosting an unusual fixture on Wednesday 27 November.
From 7.30pm, the cinema will be screening The Contestant, an 'unforgettable' and 'shocking' documentary telling the true story of a man who lived for 15 months trapped inside a small room, unaware that he was being broadcast on Japanese TV.
From award-nominated director Clair Titley, the film chronicles the journey of Tomoaki Hamatsu, known as 'Nasubi'. Tomoaki was tasked with trying to survive in an apartment using only prizes from magazine sweepstakes. He would only be freed when he'd won the equivalent of one million yen (£5,188).
Tomoaki assumed it was an audution for a reality TV show - what he didn't know was that the whole thing was being broadcast to millions of viewers, in what has been described as a real life Truman Show.
It features interviews from all the key players in the story, including Tomoaki himself, and Toshio Tsuchiya, the TV producer behind the show itself, which was called A Life in Prizes and ran on the Denpa Shōnen channel.
The documentary film has received glowing critical reception.
US news outlet CNN has described it as 'a stunning documentary', and The Guardian has called it 'remarkable'.
It also boasts a string of prestigious award nominations.
Find more details on The Light website here - there is just one showing on Wednesday 27 November, and only a handful of tickets left.
