Three Olympic gold-medallists among Stockport residents to appear in King's New Year Honours list
Three Stockport residents have made the King's New Year Honours list.
Sophie Capewell, Sophie Unwin and Emma Finucane - all professional cyclists and Olympic gold medallists - have been given the honour of Member of the British Empire (MBE).
The honours list recognises the achievements and service of extraordinary people across the United Kingdom.
The aforementioned residents of Stockport were celebrated for services to cycling.
Sophie Capewell and Emma Finucane both won gold medals at 2024's Paris Olympics in the team sprint.
Capewell's Olympic gold comes following a string of gold, silver and bronze medals at the European and World cycling championships.
Emma Finucane, meanwhile, picked up bronze in the keirin and in the sprint at Paris 2024, plus another skein of golds, silvers and bronzes in the European and World cycling championships.
Similarly remarkably, Sophie Unwin - another Stockport resident - picked up two gold medals, one silver and one bronze at the 2024 Paris Paralympics. This comes after winning silver and bronze at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, as well as a plethora of golds, silvers and bronzes at the Road World and Track World championships.
Congratulating the winners on social media, Stockport Council commented: "Huge congratulations to Stockport's amazing New Year Honours recipients!
"Your hard work and dedication to our residents and community are truly inspiring—thank you for everything you do!"
