'The vasty fields of Woodsmoor' - The ongoing story of Mirrlees Fields

The natural haven of Mirrlees Fields faces an uncertain future (Image - Alasdair Perry)

In the middle of Stockport borough, nestled behind Stepping Hill hospital, is Mirrlees Fields.

This natural wonderland contains a herbarium's worth of flora and a similarly encyclopedic range of animals: badgers, foxes, kestrels, owls, insects, and more.

Mostly invisible from roads, and similarly unassuming on a map, it could be one of Stockport's best-kept secrets.

That is, it could be, but the controversy around this acreage has always attracted considerable attention.

MAN Energy Solutions - the manufacturing company which owns the fields - has announced intentions to sell the land.

Edgeley flat closed following 'persistent anti-social behaviour'

A closure order has been secured for a property at Durham house, meaning nobody can reside in the flat for three months (Image - Google Maps)

A closure order has been secured on a property at Durham House on York Street Estate, Edgeley.

It came following 'persistent' anti-social behaviour, which was 'having a detrimental effect on the local residents and the community'. Stockport Homes and Greater Manchester Police received complaints of a high number of visitors coming and going from the property, damage to the communal entrance, as well as arguments, drug activity, and threats from visitors to residents.

Has Stockport got its fair share of government Levelling Up money?

Stockport has received £8.1m from the government's UKSPF - and the council has announced that £1.5m of this will go towards community groups (Image - Alasdair Perry)

A portion of the government's £2.6 billion UK Shared Prosperity Fund - a 'central pillar' in the Levelling Up agenda - has found its way to Stockport.

The ostensible aim of the fund is to 'increase life chances', 'spread opportunities', and 'provide local agencies'.

In less obscure terms, the fund generally aims to provide money to boost towns and cities around the UK and reduce disparity between rich and poor areas (some areas received more UKSPF funding than others, for example).

By giving this money directly to local authorities, the idea is that towns have more agency to support projects unique to their own needs, as opposed to a blanket, top-down approach from Westminster.

New jam night launches at The Spinning Top

Stockport's next big jam night is here.

Jam Soup at The Spinning Top features a company of friendly musicians, a range of instruments, and an open invitation to all attendees to get up on stage and have a jam.

Regular jam night attendees will be familiar on some level with this setup, however the atmosphere at Jam Soup is quite unique.

Organisers Dan and Martha have drawn on their experiences of other jam and open mic nights in London, distilled them, and brought them to the Pennine foothills.
