Stockroom - Stockport town centre's new library - to open in May

Stockroom, Stockport town centre's new library and events space, will officially open on 24 May 2025.
The £14.5m project aims to "breathe new life into the heart of the town centre". It's located in disused retail units in the Merseyway Centre.
As well as the library itself, Stockroom will have creative spaces, a café bar, historical archives, and more.
There will also be places to host events such as poetry readings and live music, plus areas for children and 'cutting-edge' IT facilities.
Stockport Central Library will remain open, but main provision will be moving to Stockroom.
It means that Central Library will operate in a lesser capacity than it currently does; however, it will remain open to provide adults' education services, WiFi and computers, as well as a selection of other fiction and non-fiction books.
As part of the opening, Stockroom will be hosting an art exhibition entitled 'Chosen Family Album', featuring a massive range of family photographs from the 1970s onwards, submitted by Stockport residents.

There will also be four new separate artworks on display, including two murals, a print-making project, and a sculpture made by a model maker who has worked with Tim Burton, Wes Anderson, and Guillermo del Toro.
Cllr Mark Hunter, Leader of Stockport Council, said: "The anticipation has been building, and we are absolutely thrilled to share the opening date for Stockroom. This is a key milestone in Stockport's £1bn regeneration plans, and we're so proud to see it come to fruition.
"Stockroom will not only offer an exciting cultural hub for the town but will play a central role in the ongoing revitalisation of the town centre.
"This project has been years in the making, and we can't wait to see it open its doors and become a space that truly brings our community together."

Cllr Helen Foster- Grime, Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture & Sport, said: "Stockroom marks a new chapter for Stockport—one that celebrates our heritage while embracing creativity and innovation.
"This space belongs to everybody in Stockport, bringing people together through culture, learning, shared experiences, and fun.
"We are particularly excited about the new exhibition, Chosen Family Album, which reflects the diverse stories of our town.
"Stockroom will offer something for all ages and I'm looking forward to seeing how the community and visitors will use and enjoy it in the years to come."
