The White Lion, widely believed to be Stockport's oldest pub, held a 'soft' re-opening on Friday 31 May.

It is the first time that the pub has opened its doors to customers in 10 years. A 'fuller' opening is expected later this month.

The pub now boasts a wholly refurbished interior, plus a three-room bar basement (with a sporting club, no less), an events space, outdoor seating, and more.

Heading up the White Lion team are Jon Dootson and Paul Astill, whose portfolio of venues include Alfredo's Social (just down the road, of course), Tib Street Tavern, and some of the first bars in what is now the Northern Quarter.

The refurbishment has formed part of Stockport Council's £7m investment into the regeneration of Market Place and Underbanks.

Cllr Colin MacAlister, cabinet member for economy and regeneration at Stockport Council, said: "It's absolutely fantastic to see an integral part of our town centre brought back to life."

Cllr MacAlister added: "The Underbanks is thriving and it is great to see the White Lion Coaching House be the latest to join the success story.

"We've had some great success with the renovation of our heritage buildings and it shows that they are at the heart of our town centre's regeneration."

Jon Dootson, from Stockport Leisure Limited, said: "All of our team are very excited to open the doors and welcome old and hopefully new customers and show off this amazing project.

"The focus always was to bring back a traditional pub serving amazing food with a great welcome.

"It really is the most amazing space and a great location. It's fantastic to be part of something that helps the Underbanks continue to grow."

The return of the White Lion will no doubt be a welcome one for many Stopfordians. The pub has existed since the 15th century, meaning it has been the site of countless parties, first dates, and many other happy memories over the years - and it looks set to be the site for many more to come!
