Residents of Stockport's Meadow Mill are now returning home, over three weeks after they were evacuated.

Power has been restored, and safety systems tests have now finished. The building's water supply has also been reconnected and the water pipes have been cleaned.

Cllr Mark Hunter, Leader of Stockport Council, said: "It’s a huge relief to see Meadow Mill residents finally back home after weeks of stress and uncertainty.

"No one should have to go through what they have, and we’re proud to have stood by them throughout this ordeal. I’d like to thank the residents themselves for their patience and resilience, as well as all those who worked to support them during this difficult time."

The council remains in ongoing discussions with AXA and other parties and will continue to offer support where needed.

Residents in the mill have endured a nightmare after flooding made their homes unsafe overnight on New Year's Eve.

The car park and ground floor were submerged in water and emergency services had to rescue a number of tenants who were left trapped inside the building.

Once out of the mill, they were left with no option other than staying with friends or family members, or booking hotels costing hundreds of pounds.

A small number of residents moved back into the building after running out of funds to pay for temporary accommodation, despite the lack of power and water.

They described "freezing" conditions as temperatures plummeted below zero some nights.

Ten days after the floods hit Stockport insurance provider AXA agreed to provide accommodation for those unable to return to their apartments in the mill.

Meadow Mill was first built around 1880 and was turned into a residential block when renovations finished in May 2021.
