Stockport town centre's new 'Hatters Yard' development reaches key milestone
By Alasdair Perry 23rd Jul 2026
A new Stockport town centre development has reached a key milestone.
The Hatters Yard - a complex of 148 affordable apartments at the junction of Chestergate and King Street West - has now reached roof level in its construction.
In effect, it means the concrete structure for the development's two buildings is now complete, with brickwork and window installation now due to start.
The buildings are 'progressing well', Stockport Council says, and are due for completion in 2028.
They will comprise a mix of one- and two-bedroom apartments.
All will be affordable; 101 of the apartments will be social rent, with the other 47 designated as buy to rent.
Social rent costs significantly less than the local private market rate (about 50-60 percent of the private cost), whilst buy to rent lets residents rent at a discounted rate for a fixed period, so they can save a deposit to buy a home.
The Hatters Yard started construction in August 2025, with availability and prices yet to be released.
It's a £41m project, being delivered by Stockport's Mayoral Development Corporation.
The two separate buildings on site will be linked by a large landscaped courtyard and a publicly-accessible pedestrian route from the River Mersey to Chestergate.
The design aims to reflect Stockport's industrial heritage, by blending distinctive architecture with sustainable features.
There is a deliberately small parking area to encourage more people to use public transport, or to walk or cycle, a planning statement reads.
Cllr Mark Roberts, leader of Stockport Council, said: "The topping out of Hatters Yard marks another significant milestone in our ambitious £2bn regeneration of Stockport town centre.
"Following the success of Platform, this development will provide even more of the affordable and social homes our borough needs, while helping to reconnect this riverside location with the wider town centre. Working with partners, we are creating high-quality homes and vibrant, well-connected neighbourhoods where people can live, thrive and feel proud to belong.
"Standing on site today, you can see that ambition becoming a reality.
"Once complete, Hatters Yard will help more people access good, secure housing in a place that is connected, convenient and full of opportunity, and we can't wait to welcome those who will soon call Stockport town centre their home."
Alison Dean, Chief Executive of Great Places Housing Group, said: "It's fantastic to reach this important milestone at Hatters Yard and celebrate it with our partners and stakeholders.
"We know there is strong demand for affordable homes across Stockport. This development will provide 148 high-quality homes for local people, while supporting the wider regeneration of the town centre and creating lasting benefits for the community.
"We're proud of the progress that has been made so far and look forward to seeing the development continue to take shape over the coming months."
