A former pub in Stockport town centre could be knocked down to make way for a tower stretching 17-stories high.

Plans have been sent to Stockport council for consideration and would bring 76 new apartments to the town replacing The George on Wellington Road, based opposite Merseyway Shopping Centre and near Stockport Viaduct.

These homes would be based in a part-12, part-17 storey building, in what has been dubbed a 'gateway development' that could 'encourage further regeneration within Stockport town centre.'

It comes as major regeneration work is taking place in Stockport, in a £1bn plan to build new homes and transport infrastructure which has led to the opening of Stockport Transport Interchange among other projects.

Most of the homes on the site of The George would be one-bedroom, but there are 12 two-bedroom apartments in the application, which includes a co-working space and room for businesses on the ground floor.

The George has been empty since 2017 when it stopped operating, but according to planning reports it has fallen into a state of disrepair.

The planning application was submitted by Provincial Land Limited, which has an office in Cheshire according to its website.

An affordable housing report stated that there is a requirement for three of the apartments to be priced below market rates.

The report added: 'It is proposed that all of the affordable housing required will be provided in the form of First Homes to be sold at 70 per cent of their independently assessed open market value.'

It continued: 'The scheme will be associated with a series of positive planning and regeneration benefits.

'The development of a high quality designed scheme that positively responds to the local context – including nearby heritage assets – in terms of materials, scale, layout and massing.'

Stockport council has set an initial deadline to decide the plans by February 18, 2026.
