This year marks 200 years since the opening of the Stockton & Darlington railway - a milestone widely held to mark the beginning of the modern railway.

To celebrate, Stockport is hosting a series of special performances, telling the history of the railway network.

They'll be staged by performance group Gare du Nord, which features a small troupe of actors, some of whom themselves work on the railways.

The group will be visiting Stockport railway station to perform three shows on Thursday 17th and Friday 18 July.

There will be one 8pm performance on Thursday, and a 7pm and a 9pm on Friday.

A description for the show reads: "This brand new 75min show retells the story of how the modern railway came to being.

"Along the way we meet famous historic people, relive event milestones and learn the ups and downs from the past two centuries of our railways history.

"Complete with original new music, this show will take you back to the golden age of rail. Come and find out how it all started, what the Bronte's had to do with trains and what was the British Rail Flying Saucer?"

Group leader Geoff Baker said of the performance: "It's an absolute pleasure combining my love of travel and the railway with a chance to perform across the country with such a dedicated and talented cast.

"With these shows, we're hoping to leave a lasting legacy, something our audience reactions so far agree with. We love our railways – may they continue for another 200 years."
