Stockport will celebrate Armed Forces Day on Saturday 24 June, featuring a whole host of town centre events for all residents.

From 10.30am at St Peter's Square, there will be a parade which serving regulars, reservists, veterans and cadets are encouraged to join.

In addition, there will be family-friendly activities around Market Place and Stockport Museum, including crafts, second world war history, live music, a Stockport County FC pop-up goal, and more.

Everyone is invited to attend, and the event is free.

As a statement from Stockport Council says: "The day is a time for people to come together and give recognition and thanks to all those who have served or continue to serve their country, their families and those we have lost through service."

For veterans and personnel considering taking part in the parade, full dress code can be worn but is not required.

The event is organised by the armed forces and veteran community, with support from Stockport Council and its partners.

The armed forces flag will fly from the town hall on the day.

Councillor Frankie Singleton, cabinet member for communities, culture and sport, said: "Armed Forces Day is a fantastic opportunity for communities to come together and celebrate the contributions of our Armed Forces in Stockport and beyond.

"Stockport is proud to recognise the achievements of our ex-service personnel and serving armed forces.

"Armed Forces Day gives us all a chance to thank them all and show our appreciation for what they do."

Amanda Peers, acting chair of the Stockport Armed Forces Community Organisation (SAFCO), said: "I am proud to have been able to support members of the Armed Forces Community to bring their vision of a whole town celebration of Armed Forces Day to Stockport, to recognise and acknowledge the valuable contribution and huge sacrifices made by those who serve our country.

"A small group of people have worked really hard over the last 11 months to bring this together to give Stockport's Armed Forces and Veterans community a day to remember.

"We are all grateful to Stockport Council and partners for their support and also to local businesses and organisations for making this happen through sponsoring the event – I'm sure it will be a great day for the whole of Stockport to celebrate."
