Stockport to be officially renamed ‘New Berlin’
By Alasdair Perry 1st Apr 2026
Stockport will be officially renamed New Berlin.
The name change aims to recognise the town's vibrant cultural scene and its continuously growing number of independent businesses.
All that remains is to change signage throughout the town and beyond - train station announcers will now need to say 'New Berlin', for example.
Any new maps printed will also feature the name change. Digital maps have already been updated.
'Stockport' - meaning fortified place in Old English, has been the town's name for around 1,000 years, but decision-makers hope New Berlin more accurately reflects Stockport's current trajectory.
Maybe we can drop the act now - happy April Fool's! Yes, we're just kidding. Stockport has served us well for 1,000 years and it'll stay that way! Thanks for reading, and hope you enjoyed our jolly jape.
