Stockport is commemorating the 80-year anniversary of VJ day with some special celebrations.

This Friday (15 August) will mark 80 years since Japan announced its surrender to the allied forces, in effect bringing the Second World War to an end.

Stockport is marking the occasion with an exhibition, a special civic ceremony, and a commemorative concert.

'World War II: Between VE Day and VJ Day, 1945' exhibition

This exhibition is running at Stockroom - Stockport town centre's new library and cultural space. It's open now, featuring a small but fascinating collection of documents and materials, showing how Stockport and its residents experienced VJ day and the events preceding it.

Among the documents is a digital Roll of Honours which records 23 Stockport heroes who did not return from the war in Asia, and those who came home after spending three and a half years in Prisoner of War camps in Japan.

It's a reminder that for Stopfordians, the war did not end after VE day.

Civic service

On VJ day itself (15 August) a special civic service will be taking place in Stockport town centre.

Starting at 11am in St Mary's Church, it's open to all who want to mark this important day.

Commemorative concert

Also taking place is a special commemorative concert on Sunday 17 August.

Showing at The Forum Theatre in Romiley, it will involve soaring music from beloved composers, in a special commemoration of VJ Day.

It's been organised by the Stockport Armed Forces Community Organisation, who have teamed up with the KNDS Fairey Band in what promises to be a 'spectacular' event.
