Stockport named among top 10 pub towns in England
By Alasdair Perry 14th Apr 2026
Stockport is one of the best pub towns in England.
That's according to The Telegraph, which has published a list of the top 10 pub towns.
The list was curated by expert Will Hawkes, who considered factors such as affordability, traditional culture, and how much the pubs avoid 'the excesses of modernity'.
Stockport featured on the list - which was in no particular order - for its selection of 'handsome' historic pubs with great beer selections.
Singling out two examples, Hawkes wrote: "The Crown Inn, a handsome two-storey pub close to Stockport Station, could not be anywhere else other than northern England. It sits almost underneath the awesome 19th-century viaduct that carries trains northward, while the interior is divided into four in the traditional northern fashion.
"The beer's good, too, although in that regard it may not be Stockport's best: the Magnet Freehouse, a five-minute walk away, had some of the best beer in England, let alone the north west."
Stockport was in good company, too - our town shared the list with the likes of Hastings, Huddersfield, and Ludlow.
