Stockport is one of the best commuter towns in the UK.

That's according to a study carried out by mortgage lender Pepper Money, which placed Stockport at number 10 nationally.

The study considered factors such as property and rental prices, commuting times to the nearest city centre, median salaries, quality of life, and travel costs.

Researchers praised Stockport for its 'balanced' property and rental costs, its short 10-minute rail commute to Manchester city centre, and 'modest' rail fares.

Indeed, the Stockport to Manchester commute was among the shortest in the national top 10, second only to Beeston to Nottingham.

Average house prices came in at £307,000 to buy and £1,051 per month to rent. Meanwhile, the median salary was identified as £37,479 per year.

And Stockport was also give a quality of life score of 7.6 - it was joint fourth in the list on this metric with Stalybridge.

Taking the top two spots were Rotherham and Dronfield respectively, both commuter towns for Sheffield.

Summing up the findings, a Pepper Money spokesperson said: "Some of the strongest overall scores for commuter value come from towns outside the southeast bubble—notably in the Sheffield, Nottingham, and Manchester regions.

"In contrast, London's surrounding commuter towns dominate the bottom of the rankings, with high house prices and long, expensive commutes contributing to their poor scores.

The spokesperson added: "Short commutes not only save time but also reduce daily stress, energy costs, and the overall carbon footprint—benefits that are increasingly important to today's workers...

"[These towns] offer a rare combination of proximity, value, and quality of life."
