Stockport County to provide free PE kits for primary school children
The Stockport County Community Trust has launched a new scheme which will provide 3,500 free PE kits to primary school children across the borough.
Dubbed 'Kits by County', the scheme's aim is to get more children active - particularly since, as the Trust found, many children are sitting out of PE because they don't have a kit.
The Trust also found that, for more than 50% of children, PE at school is their main form of exercise.
The kits would therefore aim to get more primary school children involved in sport - and who knows what future talent could be developed?
However, 3,500 kits is just the beginning. The ultimate aim is 12,500 kits by 2025, which would provide for around half of the borough's primary school population.
The funding will come from a range of sources - from the club and its owner Mark Stott, from County shirt sales (with £2 from every shirt sale going towards the Kits by County scheme), and from a fundraiser on JustGiving, which you can donate to HERE.
The kits will be delivered at the start of the next school year in September. Included is a white t-shirt, a pair of black joggers, a pair of black shorts and a black sweatshirt.
Alison Warwood, Stockport County Community Trust CEO said: "Not having a PE kit shouldn't be what stops children from taking part in physical activity.
"The schools' 'lost and found' bin sadly comes with a playground stigma, and if children are to enjoy PE in school, they need their own kit they can take pride in.
"As a result, the Club's owner, Mark Stott has agreed to fund 3,500 PE kits for Stockport's primary school children in September, targeting families through schools who're most in need, including those families who fall outside of traditional indicators such as universal credit and the pupil premium and receive little-to-no help. "We want to raise enough funds so that, next year, we can provide 12,500 PE kits, helping to get more children active and enjoying sport."
