Primary school students across Stockport are now able to travel through time, across the world, or to entirely unknown places.

That's because Stockport County's community trust has given away a veritable library of books to primary schools across the area, allowing students to enjoy a bit of escapism for free.

The Hatters are one of 104 football clubs across the country which is giving away a share of 120,000 books, as part of the Premier League's Primary Stars programme.

Around 1,200 books in all will be donated to schools across Stockport, with the aim of encouraging reading for pleasure and potentially sparking a lifelong interest in literature.

It aims to buck the downward trend of reading for pleasure, which is at a two-decade low in the UK, polls suggest.

Stockport County Community Trust's Premier League Primary Stars Coordinator, Sam Roberts, said: "World Book Day is an incredible opportunity for our Community Trust to inspire children to discover the joy of reading. Being able to gift pupils a book of their own makes a real difference, especially at a time when reading for pleasure is in decline. 

"We're proud to support schools across Stockport and help create positive experiences that build confidence, spark imagination and encourage a lifelong love of reading."
