Stockport Council roundup: Offerton Fire Station, Marple Leisure and Communities Hub, Town of Culture funding

Here is a roundup of the biggest stories from Stockport Council this week.
Councillors were opposed to proposals to reduce service at Offerton Fire Station; the Council has given an update on the progress of the Marple Leisure and Communities Hub; and Town of Culture funding has been made available to local community groups.

'The difference between life and death' - councillors oppose Offerton Fire Station cuts
Plans to cut services at a fire station in Stockport to improve response times in Manchester city centre have caused uproar.
Proposals currently under consultation would see 24-hour cover at the Offerton and Sale fire stations cut and replaced with on-call crews. These would become 'day crewing' stations with firefighters 'on call' from 6pm in the evening to 8.30am, being called to incidents via mobile phone if required, Stockport Town Hall heard.
Councillors were unanimous in calling for GMFRS and Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham to reconsider the proposals.

Stockport Council gives update on Marple Leisure and Community Hub
Progress on the Marple Leisure and Community Hub is progressing with the design phase, Stockport Council has announced.
The council is putting a professional services team in place to help progress a 'detailed design'. Over the coming months, the council will also begin a community engagement process to help inform the forthcoming planning application.
"The engagement process will cover the final design of the Leisure and Community Hub itself, as well as walking, cycling and highways improvements to be delivered at the same time, all of which formed part of the funding bid", the council says.

Town of Culture funding available to community groups and creative organisations
Stockport residents who manage community groups, creative or cultural organisations, have the opportunity to apply for Town of Culture funding for 'new activities and projects'.
This means that non-goverment organisations can host their own Town of Culture events, providing an alternative to the flagship events such as Stockport Moves and Stockport Makes.
Stockport Council has said: "We want community groups, creative and cultural enterprises, and other organisations to be able to deliver activities and initiatives which give our residents new opportunities to be active and creative and be part of our exciting Town of Culture year.
