Stockport Council issues statement on flags in public

Stockport Council leader Mark Roberts has issued a statement on flying flags in public.
Cllr Roberts said that flags can remain in place so long as they do not pose a safety risk or come with slogans.
He added that if residents do want to display flags, they should do so at their own homes; flags placed on lampposts have to be removed as they are "not designed for this purpose".
Painted flags on roundabouts or road markings are considered to pose a safety risk, and so these will similarly be repaired 'swiftly', Cllr Roberts said.
The council leader's full statement reads: "We know some residents have chosen to display flags in the public realm. Our national flag is proudly flown at the Town Hall, where it represents us all.
"As long as flags do not pose a safety risk or have slogans written over them, they will remain in place for now.
"However, as lampposts are not designed for this purpose and removal costs fall to the Council, if residents wish to display a flag we encourage them to do so at their own homes.
"It is also likely that flags will need to be removed in the future if they become damaged or worn out.
"When it comes to painted road markings or roundabouts, repairs will be made swiftly as these are critical for safety.
"Incidents of criminal damage will be investigated, and these repairs carry costs at a time when Council budgets are already under pressure."
