The results are in for two by-elections in Stockport borough.

The Lib Dems have won both seats, with Cllr Rachel Bresnahan and Cllr Huma Khan elected in the Bredbury Green & Romiley and Cheadle West & Gatley wards respectively.

The new councillors replace former councillors Lisa Smart and Tom Morrison.

Both Ms Smart and Mr Morrison were recently elected as MPs in Hazel Grove and Cheadle respectively - they stepped down from their roles on the council due to time constraints.

The full results are as follows:

Bredbury Green & Romiley (voter turnout: 21.5%)

  • Papa Andoh-Kweku (LABOUR) - 127
  • Pat Bentley (CONSERVATIVE) - 552
  • Rachel Bresnahan (LIB DEM) - 1,506
  • Stephanie Wyatt (GREEN) - 104

Cheadle West & Gatley (voter turnout: 22%)

  • Alexander Drury (GREEN) - 341
  • Dan Farley (LABOUR) - 517
  • Michael Fox (CONSERVATIVE) - 553
  • Huma Khan (LIB DEM) - 1,159

It means that the composition of the 63 council seats at current is as follows:

  • Lib Dem (29)
  • Labour (23)
  • Edgeley Community Association (3)
  • Green (3)
  • Independent Ratepayers (3)
  • Independent (1)
  • VACANT (1)*

*A councillor will be elected to the remaining vacant seat (Bramhall South & Woodford) on 31 October.

Cllr Khan is the first ever Muslim councillor in Stockport borough.
