Stockport at risk of flash flooding following heavy rain
By Alasdair Perry 19th Aug 2026
Stockport is at risk of flash flooding and travel disruption as a result of heavy rain and thunderstorms today (Wednesday 19 August).
That's according to the Met Office, which has issued a yellow weather warning for much of the north of England, including Stockport.
The warning is in place from 7pm on Wednesday 19th through to 10am on Thursday 20th.
The Met Office said there is a 'good chance' that driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water or hail, causing disruption for buses and cars alike.
Delays to train services may also be possible.
There may also be some flooding, which could damage homes and businesses, as well as lightning strikes.
And some short-term loss of power and other services is 'likely', the Met Office has added.
Do you need to do anything to prepare?
The Met Office has suggested that residents who live in an area at risk of flash flooding should consider preparing an 'emergency flood kit'.
Thus includes torches, batteries, a power pack, a mobile phone, and any medication.
Areas which are particularly at risk include low-lying urban areas with lots of hard surfaces.
The Met Office said: "If you find yourself outside and hear thunder, protect yourself by finding a safe enclosed shelter (such as a car).
"Do not shelter under or near trees, or other structures which may be struck by lightning. If you are on an elevated area, move to lower ground."
