Stockport's final few months as Greater Manchester's Town of Culture will go out with a bang, as a range of musical events are set to take place across the borough.

As well as the usual range of top acts at venues throughout the area, the next few months will see some special 'Town of Culture' specific events.

These range from workshops for budding musicians, through to concerts and competitions.

Kicking off proceedings on February 19 is The Spinning Top's Battle of the Bands. This event is for secondary school pupils, who will be vying for a spot on the Spinning Top stage. After battling it out with music, the winning band[s] will be chosen to represent Stockport in a Greater Manchester Rock and Pop Showcase at Manchester Academy on 17 March.

Further still, in March, Elbow cofounder Richard Jupp will be taking to South City Studios at Pear Mill for a free workshop on all things drumming. This is an opportunity brush up on your chops, ask questions, chat to some other players, and more.

Also, on 15 and 20 February from 11am to 1pm or 1.30-3.30pm, Henry Walker-Brown from Noise Academy will be teaching participants how to DJ and beatbox.

Or, if you're as happy watching music as playing it, the following concerts will be taking place over the coming weeks:

  • Thursday, 21 March, Stockport Music Centre, 5pm - Infant Music Makers.
  • Friday, 22 March, St Andrew's Church, Cheadle Hulme, 7.30pm - Strings Concert
  • Monday, 25 March, Venue TBC, 7pm - Rockschool & Rockschool Senior Concert.
  • Tuesday 26 March, Venue TBC, 7:00pm - Junior Voices and Musical Theatre Concert.
  • Wednesday, 27 March, St Andrew's Church, Cheadle Hulme, 7pm - Wind Bands and Jazz Club Concert
