Stockport's newly-elected MPs have pledged to try to secure funding for repairs at Stepping Hill Hospital.

Labour's Navendu Mishra won in the Stockport constituency with a 15,000 majority, while Lib Dems Lisa Smart and Tom Morrison were elected in former Tory seats Hazel Grove and Cheadle.

Repair issues have been piling up at Stepping Hill Hospital, with recent reports of collapsing ceilings and flooded corridors.

It follows the closure of the hospital's Outpatiens B building last year.

The new MPs in the borough of Stockport all vowed to try and secure funding to make repairs at the hospital, or to pay for a new health facility.

Tom Morrison said: "We need to figure out how we can unlock the funding to get those repairs sorted and get that hospital back up and running properly, it's going to be my number one priority."

Lisa Smart added: "People have been really clear with me that they want better health services locally, they want Stepping Hill fixed.

"I have no problem of making a pest of myself and taking every opportunity on this, whether it's asking the prime minister a question, whatever avenue we have to push the case to get Stepping Hill properly fixed and get a new additional hospital facility in the town centre, it's something I will do at every opportunity."

Labour's Navendu Mishra said: "The [NHS] waiting list is a big issue, part of that is Stepping Hill Hospital. We need real investment in Stepping Hill, either at the same site or at a different site.

"We've got almost eight million people on national waiting lists for the NHS. That needs to be addressed."

Asked whether Labour would provide funding for facilities like Stepping Hill, Mr Mishra added: "Absolutely, we've seen 14 years of decline, 14 years of cuts for public services, we've got issues with the library system, our leisure centres, all sorts of issues with the public realm.

"Labour will offer economic growth which will boost tax revenue and bring real investment."

Stepping Hill Hospital falls into the Cheadle constituency but is used by residents across the borough of Stockport and beyond.
