Stepping Hill Hospital imposes visiting restrictions amid norovirus outbreak
By Alasdair Perry 19th Feb 2026
Stepping Hill Hospital has introduced restrictions on visiting following a high number of norovirus cases on the wards.
The hospital usually allows open visiting. However, since the uptick in cases of the winter vomiting bug, all visits to patients are suspended apart from a few exceptions.
Patients at the end of their life, or who have learning disabilities or dementia, can still receive visitors - all other visits are prohibited while staff work to contain the spread of the virus.
The suspension comes with immediate effect - the decision will be reviewed on Friday 20 February.
A Stockport NHS spokesperson said: "We recognise the important benefits that visiting brings for patients, families and carers.
"However, because of the increasing risk from norovirus to our vulnerable patients, and pressures on our services, unfortunately we are having to put visiting restrictions in place."
Hospital staff are carrying out additional cleaning work at any affected areas, and taking extra care to identify affected patients early.
