Starbucks drive-thru planned in new ‘leisure and retail destination’ in Stockport
By Declan Carey - Local Democracy Reporter 3rd Feb 2026
Stockport could get a drive-thru Starbucks in plans for a new 'leisure and retail destination' near the town centre.
The proposed scheme is located on land off Hempshaw Lane and St Mary's Way, which could be redeveloped to open the coffee shop along with an 80-bed residential care home.
Concept drawings included in the planning application show the drive-thru with Starbucks branding.
The care home would be based on the northern part of the site with the coffee shop to the south.
Access to the drive-thru coffee shop would be from Brundrett Street off Hempshaw Lane, with around 24 spaces for customer parking and the drive-thru lane at the back of the building.
An empty office and storage buildings are currently based on the land, and these would be demolished if the plans are approved.
The application was submitted by Torsion Care and Thistlewood Properties, with planning reports describing the area as 'highly visible and well-connected', close to residential areas and other businesses.

Concerns were flagged in the planning report about potential 'noise and odour' impacts, which would be 'over and above that of the existing use'.
It added: 'Noise from customer car park activities will include arrivals, door slams and departure of vehicles.
'During deliveries there may be additional noise from trolleys or lifts. The drivethrough lane may cause noise from standing vehicles with their engines running.
'There may be conversation among customers and from the customer drive-through order point.'
The report continued: 'The proposal will create a new leisure and retail destination point for the area, bringing in a more diverse range of people to this location, thus helping to populate this part of the town and generate activity through the day and at weekends.'
The proposed care home in the scheme could be based in an L-shaped building with a 'large enclosed garden' to the east and south.
A total of 29 car parking spaces will serve the car home, along with bicycle parking for staff and short-stay visitors to make use of.
Stockport council has set a target date to decide the plans by April 22.
