Thursday 8 May will mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe day (VE Day).

On that day in 1945, the Allied Forces accepted the unconditional surrender of Germany, marking the end of the Second World War in Europe.

To mark this special occasion, Stockport is preparing for a wide range of events, including street parties, parades, and much more.

One of the main events on Thursday 8th will be a ceremony outside St George's Church featuring standard bearers from Stockport's armed forces community. It starts at 6.30pm.

Also on the 8th is a celebration at the Age UK hub in Edgeley. It'll be a social event, running from 10am-2pm, with tea, cakes, music from the era and more. It promises to be "a celebration of history, friendship and community".

Also on the day, primary schools will be hosting their own street parties, and church bells will be ringing for 30 minutes from 6.30pm.

The following day, on Friday 9 May, a new exhibition at Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery will open to the public, titled: 'The War isn't Over Just Yet'.

Meanwhile on Saturday, a special event will be taking place in Bramhall featuring a market (hosted by Worker Bee Markets), a book event, 1940s crafts for youngsters, and much more.

Councillor Mark Hunter, leader of Stockport Council, said: "VE-Day 80 is an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who secured our freedom while celebrating the resilience and hope of the communities who rebuilt their lives after the war. I encourage everyone to join us in commemorating this special anniversary.

"VE-Day 80 marks an important occasion in our history. We are proud to support initiatives that not only honour our past but also celebrate those who have shaped our community since 1945.

"As well as other activities taking place across the borough, Stockport Town Hall will fly the VE Day flag to honour the service of the Second World War generation. Let's take the time to remember all those people who sacrificed so much for our future.

"I'd encourage everyone in Stockport to take part — whether it's attending a local event, joining a street party, or simply taking a quiet moment to say thank you. This is our chance to show that we haven't forgotten."
