Stockport and Marple named most popular Manchester commuter towns
By Alasdair Perry 6th Jul 2026
Stockport and Marple are the most popular commuter towns around Manchester city centre.
That's according to the property portal Rightmove, who have published a ranking of the most popular locations based on buyer demand.
When it comes to towns around Manchester, Stockport took the number one spot, followed by Marple in second place.
Stalybridge, Rochdale and Warrington took up third, fourth and fifth respectively.
Stockport was 'well ahead' of the competition, researchers found, with property listings in the area generating 70 percent more enquiries than Manchester itself.
It was also praised for its 'exceptionally fast' commute times, with six fast trains per hour and many more services in-between.
Although the ranking acknowledged that Marple's transport links were slower and less frequent, the area still scored highly for its buyer demand, its 'lifestyle appeal', and its "picturesque setting on the edge of the Peak District".
Stockport and Marple were found to have the highest average house price of the top five, with Stockport at £308,299 and Marple at £383,404.
Local estate agents Julian Wadden have suggested a number of different reasons for Stockport's growing popularity with buyers.
Among these are value-for-money, family-friendly neighbourhoods, strong schools, access to green space, and good transport connections.
"For many families, Stockport offers an attractive combination of space, value, schools, connectivity and lifestyle", a Julian Wadden spokesperson said in a recent article.
"As buyer priorities continue to evolve, it's easy to see why more families are choosing to put down roots in Stockport and why demand across many of the area's most popular neighbourhoods remains strong."

Other high-scoring commuter towns and their respective cities were Hitchin (London), Bath (Bristol), Leamington Spa (Birmingham), and Paisley (Glasgow).
