Some flags flown in public on lampposts will be taken down to allow for Christmas lighting to be installed, Stockport Council has said.

However, the rest will be allowed to remain in place so long as they do not pose a safety risk or come with slogans written on them.

Cllr Mark Roberts, leader of Stockport Council, has updated his statement on flags in public spaces ahead of Christmas light switch-ons across Stockport.

"We know some residents have chosen to display flags in the public realm", Cllr Roberts said.

"Our national flag is proudly flown at the Town Hall, where it represents us all.

"As long as flags do not pose a safety risk or have slogans written over them, they will remain in place for now.

"However, we are now starting to remove flags on lampposts where Christmas lighting is due to be installed. This is to allow us to securely operate the lights, keeping our streets safe for everyone throughout the festive season. Lights will begin to be switched on from 14th November.

"As lampposts are not designed for this purpose and removal costs fall to the council, if residents wish to display a flag we encourage them to do so at their own homes.

"It is also likely that flags will need to be removed in the future if they become damaged or worn out.

"When it comes to painted road markings or roundabouts, repairs will be made swiftly as these are critical for safety.

"Incidents of criminal damage will be investigated, and these repairs carry costs at a time when Council budgets are already under pressure."
