A 34-year-old man has been charged with 24 shoplifting offences following his arrest in Edgeley on Monday (15 January).

The long-term suspect was spotted by an officer from Stockport's Central Neighborhood Team. Officers then conducted an arrest in the Thomson Street area.

Intelligence linked the man to a series of shoplifting offences since October 2023.

The 34-year-old - of no fixed abode - appeared in Stockport Magistrates Court on Tuesday 16 January.

Sergeant Gareth Davis of GMP's Stockport district said; "We understand from listening and speaking to our local community that shoplifting is a key issue affecting shops in the area and we want to make sure we can keep both businesses and shoppers safe as well as providing a welcoming environment.

"We will continue to carry out our dedicated patrols to ensure we can deter any would-be criminals with rigorous policing in hotspot areas. It is not acceptable this type of crime and we will not tolerate it.

"Our ongoing works means we have a suspect in custody linked to recent offences in the area and we will be working hard to ensure justice is served."
